Two Pro Tools Features for Organizing a Large Session
Avid describes Folder Tracks as containers for organizing large sessions, and Track Pin in Pro Tools 2026.4 lets you keep selected tracks in place while you scroll vertically through the Edit window.
This guide uses both features for one purpose: keeping the tracks that matter for the current task in view. Folder Tracks decide what can collapse. Track Pin decides what must stay visible. Everything else follows from the task you are doing right now.

From the Current Task to a Reset Focus
Seven steps, in order. Select a step to see what is pinned, what is open, and what is collapsed at that point, using one example throughout: a dialogue edit in a 148-track post session.
Name the Task Before You Touch the Layout
Start with one sentence: what are you doing in this pass? “Edit the dialogue in scene 12” is a task. “Work on the session” is not. The task decides which tracks matter; the folder tree does not.
- Write the task in a Master Notes track or a memory location name.
- Decide what “done” looks like for this pass.
- Leave the layout alone until the task is clear.
A 148-Track Post Session, Mapped for a Dialogue Edit
Open and close the folder blocks to see how the session reads. The focus rail stays fixed while you scroll the map, the same way pinned tracks stay at the top of the Edit window.

Basic and Routing Folders
Both folder types collapse and expand their member tracks. A Basic Folder only organizes the display; a Routing Folder also has its own audio input and output. For focus work either one decides what can collapse, and nothing in this guide changes routing.
What to Pin
Pin references, not working tracks: a dialogue guide, a picture reference, a notes track. Pinned tracks stay at the top of the Edit window while the folders below them open and close.
Saving Focus States
Memory Locations can recall which tracks are shown and how tall they are. Save one per stage (edit, mix, review), and changing focus becomes a single recall instead of a rebuild.
